Holidays in the Costa Brava

Costa Brava (Spanish Costa Brava, which means “Wild Coast”) is a 160-kilometer strip of the Mediterranean coast in the province of Girona (or Girona) in northeast Catalonia. One of the most popular areas of tourism and recreation. The relief consists of impregnable cliffs and cliffs, overgrown with Pyrenean pines and firs, which alternate with magnificent bays and bays with beaches of white sand and pebbles. Here, along with first-class resorts and five-star hotels, beautiful examples of medieval architecture in small port towns and fishing villages have been preserved. The Costa Brava extends from the town of Blanes, 60 km northeast of Barcelona and to the resort of Rosas near the French border.

The most famous resorts of the Costa Brava are Lloret de Mar, Blanes, Roses, Estartit and Tossa de Mar.
The capital of party-goers from all over the world, the lively resort of Lloret de Mar, located near Blanes, attracts primarily young people from 18 to 30 years old thanks to its many bars, cafes and nightclubs. However, five magnificent beaches, the largest water park in Europe, the oceanarium and the amusement park Port Aventura of the film company Universal Studios make Lloret de Mar very attractive for families. Other attractions include go-karting, parasailing, aquabike riding, horseback riding and much more. The resort offers a huge selection of hotels for accommodation: 9 four-star hotels, a sufficient number of three-star hotels and many inexpensive and affordable one-star hotels and hostels.

Of particular note are the four-star Aquarium Hotel and Gran Hotel Monterrey, located in the Mediterranean garden (50,000 sq.m.) with sea views.

If you want to relax in a more relaxed atmosphere – go to Blanes, the oldest of the cities of Costa Brava (the first settlement dates back to the 1st century BC), located only 10 kilometers to the south. Among the attractions include the castle of San Juan (mid-13th century), crowning a mountain that rises above the city, the ruins of the Viscount Castle of Cabrera (12th century), the Romanesque Basilica of St. Barbara (12th century). On the outskirts of Blanes, there are two large botanical gardens – Mar and Murthra and Pinia de Rosa, as well as the large Marineland water entertainment complex, where you can enjoy shows featuring dolphins, sea lions, and other exotic animals. A great advantage of the resort is its relative proximity to Barcelona and the international airport (60 km).

In Blanes, there are 15 hotels and a relatively small number of guest houses. The largest and most modern hotel, The Esplendid, is located just 200 meters from S’Abanell’s main beach. The hotel has several pools, a tennis court and a fitness center; The rooms are equipped with air conditioning and satellite TV. However, most visitors to Blanes prefer to rent private houses or villas that can accommodate up to 40,000 tourists. Thus, for the right price, everyone can choose the necessary level of comfort.

Roses is a small port town in the north of the Costa Brava, thirty kilometers from the French border. Despite the developed tourist infrastructure and proximity to European capitals, Roses managed to maintain the indescribable atmosphere of the Spanish Middle Ages. In addition, the resort is considered the most environmentally friendly place on the coast. There are two national parks here – Creus Cape Peninsula and Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l’Emporda, the birthplace of unique species of flora and fauna. Everyone can go on a free tour to the Citadel on the eastern outskirts of the city – an impressive fortification built in 1543 and covering a total area of 130,000 sq.m.

Gourmet travelers will certainly appreciate the fact that it is in Rosas that the famous El Bulli restaurant is located. This year, he is again recognized as the best restaurant in the world, and his owner, Farron Adria, is the best chef. The honorary title was awarded at the international competition in San Pellegrino organized by Restaurant magazine. Experts compare the unsurpassed art of the avant-garde artist Farron Adria with the experiments of Picasso, claiming that the outstanding chef finally established the status of real art for high cuisine.

It is curious that a former student and best friend Adria Eston Blumenthal, who owns the restaurant “The Fat Duck” in the Irish town of Bray, literally steps on the heels of his teacher in a dispute for world leadership. Over the seven-year history of the contest, this year the difference in the number of points scored by both haute cuisine masters was minimal.

If you want to relax in Roses with the utmost comfort, we recommend staying at the five-star Vistabella Hotel or the four-star Almadrava and Hotel Terraza. For less demanding travelers, there is a huge selection of traditional Spanish guest houses, hostels and campsites.
